Effects of background noise on the speech acoustics of people with aphasia

We investigated the effect of six background noise conditions (silent baseline, pink noise, monologue, lively conversation, one-sided phone call, and cocktail noise) on acoustic measures speech during story retells in people with aphasia. Eleven individuals aphasia 11 age- gender-matched control participants heard through headphones while they retold short stories. measured mean standard deviation intensity fundamental frequency (F0), rate. A Matlab application computed a speaking time ratio measure (i.e., versus pausing). With exception monologue call condition, both significantly increased their F0 presence regardless type. Additionally, had lower ratios rates than participants. All speakers made changes hearing likely because rises an effort to increase signal-to-noise ratio, increases due presumed rise subglottal pressure. Further research is suggested investigate other differences, possibly at segmental level, between produced informational energetic conditions.
